In-depth interviews (IDIs) are a cornerstone of qualitative research. They provide detailed, one-on-one conversations that uncover insights not accessible through surveys alone.

Individual Interviews
Ideal for exploring specific ideas, testing concepts, or evaluating materials, individual IDIs allow for focused, thorough discussions. They’re particularly useful for topics that are more emotional or sensitive, where the rapport between moderator and respondent drives deeper insights.

Dyads and Triads
These are small-group IDIs with two or three participants. They maintain the depth of individual interviews while introducing interaction, which can reveal perspectives and debates that might not surface in a solo setting—especially useful for polarizing or controversial topics.

Phone-to-Web Research
While online surveys are increasingly common, telephone contact can still be the most effective way to reach certain groups, such as business executives or medical specialists, or when live dialogue is needed.

The limitation of phone interviews is that they can’t easily present dynamic materials like product profiles, pricing scenarios, or multimedia content. Static web pages emailed to respondents can help in some cases, but they’re restrictive when materials need to adapt based on answers or randomization.

Phone-to-web approaches combine the best of both worlds—using telephone outreach to engage respondents and online tools to deliver interactive, tailored content when needed.

Quantitative Study
Quantitative research is a systematic approach to gathering and analyzing data from various sources. It relies on numerical measurements and statistical techniques to produce clear, objective results. The main goal is to quantify a problem, determine how widespread it is, and generate findings that can be applied to a larger population.

In contrast, qualitative research is more exploratory. It focuses on understanding behaviors, motivations, and opinions through interviews, observations, or open-ended surveys. The insights it provides are subjective and context-dependent, often helping to uncover why certain problems exist or how people perceive them. Depending on the study’s goals, qualitative research can be conducted before or after quantitative research to provide deeper context.

Organizations that favor quantitative research are usually seeking measurable, statistically reliable outcomes. Unlike qualitative findings—which can be influenced by the researcher’s interpretation—quantitative results are consistent and interpretable in a similar way by different analysts.

Qualitative/IDI Study
An in-depth interview (IDI) is a qualitative research method where a moderator engages with a single respondent, either in person, over the phone, or online. IDIs are often used as an initial step in B2B research because the one-on-one setup allows for a level of detail and openness that group discussions or surveys can’t achieve. This makes them ideal for exploring sensitive topics or tapping into the insights of industry experts.

The private setting also gives moderators a chance to observe subtle cues—like tone of voice or body language during face-to-face sessions—and to ask follow-up questions or clarify responses when needed.

IDIs have been a mainstay of qualitative research for decades. While the method goes by different names—such as individual interviews, individual depth interviews, or face-to-face interviews—the core principle remains the same: one interviewer, one respondent, in a focused, interactive session.

Desk Research –
Desk research, also called secondary research, involves using existing data instead of gathering new, custom research. While it might not answer every specific question, it’s a valuable way to gather insights—often at little or no cost.
